9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Dallas
Last week I was in Dallas following a commercial shoot. Saturday was my last day before flying home. I woke up at 7 a.m. to the sound of bagpipes playing, which seemed a bit strange. Initially I thought the sounds were coming from a TV in the next hotel room. But the sounds grew louder and I decided to find out what was going on, so I left the hotel with my camera.
In a park on the corner of the hotel I was staying, I discovered about 400 firemen from all across Texas. They were about to do the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb, which is held across the USA to honour the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. Each of them was about to scale a huge building with full equipment on and climb the building twice.
It’s hard to put into words the devastating impact 9/11 had on people all across the world. This was a new form of terrorism we had not seen before. I had just finished a press photography course so I was very influenced by the reporting and photojournalism at the time. So I still have many of the newspapers and news magazines to this day from the day after those events.
I was quite moved last week when I discovered this happening and it is hard to believe it is 25 years ago today.
